Maasai Ostrich Farm is set in 200 acres of rolling grasslands, on the Athi River/Kitengela plains, 45 kilometers from Nairobi and about 30minutes drive from the Jomo Kenyatta International Airport.

Ostrich is one of the largest living species of bird in the world. Ostriches are known for their amazingly long necks, lofty heights, two toes and large eye ball. There are 2 types of ostriches at the farm; the Somali ostrich with blue-neck and the Masai ostrich which has a pink neck and legs. The ostrich is the largest bird in the world and cannot fly but can run up to 70 kilometers per hour.

In the tour farm you have an opportunity to be up close and personal with ostriches. You get to tour the farm and learn the way the birds are bred in different age groups, from babies to adults.

There also are plenty of opportunities to catch an appropriate memento image—or a selfie with the birds. There is also the opportunity to hand-feed the ostriches, and if the weather is good, you can even take an ostrich ride!

After the tour you’ll have lunch with ostrich meat that’s low in cholesterol. Later inside the afternoon you can swim as you loosen up before we return again to the city.

A collection of Kenya tribal settings where you shall sample , understand the unique and fascinating Kenya cultural lifestyles. Fascinating tourist village located around 10 kilometres from the capital city of Nairobi. A half day tour of the village is enough to learn and understand the cultural heritage of Kenya. You will enjoy traditional dance performances, songs and folklore during your visit here. A jaw-dropping acrobatic show is a much loved attraction at Bomas of Kenya

Brief Itinerary

Your tour starts by pick you from your Nairobi Hotel or JKIA Airport at 1pm.

Here you will experience the rich culture of Kenya’s 42 different ethnic groups as they live on their day-to-day basis. This is clearly demonstrated through traditional dances, music, song, and folklore. There is a splendid arena where acrobatic shows are performed.

The Bomas of Kenya put on displays of traditional dancers and spread over many acres, it also has a wonderful display of mud huts and traditional Kenyan homesteads. The Bomas of Kenya is the ideal place to bring energetic children as they can freely run in and out of the traditional houses & mud huts, climb up ladders and generally have a wonderfully active time.

These traditional houses are set out in clusters according to the region. The homes are grouped with the first wife’s hut, second wife’s hut, granary etc and you can see where the livestock are kept and the enormous variety between the huts.

Bomas of Kenya was initiated in 1971 after Kenya’s independence (1964) and it is run by the Kenyan Government and aims to promote Kenya’s rich cultural heritage.
In addition to the main attractions (the dancers and the traditional homesteads), there is also a large, wooden play area for young children, a small, low-key village of craft shops and other attractions.

Then At Giraffe Center interact up close and personal with endangered Rothschild giraffes

The post David Sheldrick Elephant Orphanage & Giraffe Center Day Tour appeared first on Masaai Safaris.

]]>
Explore David Sheldrick Elephant Orphanage get some time with baby and young orphaned elephants, viewing is strictly between 11am and noon then visit Giraffe Center interact up close and personal with giraffes here, feeding them. The centre protects the endangered Rothschild giraffes. Here you can hand-feed, pet or even kiss the giraffes. Warthogs are also commonly seen here snuffling about in the mud. The centre offers great nature education and remains one of Kenya’s success conservation stories

Brief Itinerary
The tour starts by picking you from your Hotel/JKIA Airport.
We will drive you to David Sheldrick Wildlife Trust have a walk through the little center from 11am – 12pm in an open space, with a rope fence around it. The youngest elephants come trotting out of the bush to greet their keepers who stand at the ready with giant bottles of milk. For the next 10-15 minutes you can watch each little one slurp and gargle their milk. When they’re done, there’s water to play with and keepers to nudge and get hugs from. You can reach out and touch and nuzzle any elephant that comes close to the ropes, occasionally they’ll slip under the ropes and have to be chased back by the keepers. While you get to watch them play and take photos. You find out how old they were when they arrived at the orphanage, where they were rescued from, and what got them into trouble. The most common reasons for getting orphaned being: mother’s poached, falling into wells, and human/wildlife conflict.

Once the youngest are all fed, they are led back into the bush, and it’s the turn of the 2-3 year olds. Some of them can feed themselves, and some are still fed by their keepers. It’s very cute to watch them hold their giant milk bottles in their trunks and close their eyes with joy as they make quick work of several gallons of milk. Again, you are free to touch them if they come close to the ropes (and they will), and watch them interact with their keepers, munch on some branches of their favorite acacias, and play with the half drums of water and mud.

You will then be driven to Giraffe centre where you will get a completely up close and personal interaction with Rothschild giraffes viewing them as well as feeding them. The centre has rescued, hand-reared and released around 500 orphaned giraffes back into the wild since opening in 1979. You can’t imagine the size of a giraffe’s head until one licks you!, This attraction offered opportunities to feed the endangered Rothschild’s giraffe by hand or by kissing. The location also offers a fine education on the physiology, behaviors and habitat preferences of these beautiful animals.
